A Missing Element in the Popular Law of Attraction Recipes

A Missing Element in the Popular Law of Attraction Recipes by Andrea Avari Stevens

This is how Wikipedia summarizes the steps in attracting what you want:

1. Know what you want.
2. Ask the universe for it.
3. Feel and behave as if the object of your desire is on its way.
4. Be open to receiving it.

Perhaps what is missing here is observing and evolving the level of consciousness in ourselves that is requesting the attraction. By this statement I am wondering if the success of the Law of Attraction has more to do with who we are as an inner process than following the steps listed above like we are baking cookies. Wayne Dyer has listed in his book, Intentions, a set of points to keep in mind when setting the affirmations for that which we desire. His first is being able to see the world as a benevolent place that has our highest good in hand.

The second point states an affirmation that clarifies abundance is not what we deserve but what we are.

Allowing is the third point, Dyer defines allowing as perfect alignment of our worthiness to be abundance and our desire to realize abundance. He continues by writing that we need to exorcise any negative thoughts that would interfere with our knowing that we are Source. He goes on to discuss the importance of thinking abundantly harmonious thoughts among other points to consider.

I am wondering if we move too quickly through the points, in particular, the point of allowing. How do we explore our degree of worthiness to actually consider ourselves the Source of abundance. Is it enough to just keep deflecting negative thoughts and think positive ones? Are we fooling ourselves with a technique of changing our thoughts but not changing what resides in us as resistance. Resistance in the form of parts of ourselves that are not healed.

Here is where our work lies.
Wayne Dyer expands the list by adding:
1. Seeing the world as an abundant, providing, friendly place.
2. Affirm: I attract success and abundance into my life because that is who I am.
3. Stay in an attitude of allowing.
4. Use your present moments to activate thoughts that are in harmony.

Step 1: See the world as an abundant, providing, friendly place. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. When you see the world as abundant and friendly, your intentions are genuine possibilities. They will, in fact, become a certainty, because your world will be experienced from the higher frequencies. In this first step, you’re receptive to a world that provides rather than restricts. You’ll see a world that wants you to be successful and abundant, rather than one that conspires against you.

Step 2: Affirm: I attract success and abundance into my life because that is who I am.
This puts you into vibratory harmony with your Source. Your goal is to eliminate any distance between what you desire and that from which you pull it into your life. Abundance and success aren’t out there waiting to show up for you. You are already it, and the Source can only provide you with what it is, and, consequently, what you are already.

Step 3: Stay in an attitude of allowing. Resistance is disharmony between your desire for abundance and your beliefs about your ability or unworthiness. Allowing means a perfect alignment. An attitude of allowing means that you ignore efforts by others to dissuade you. It also means that you don’t rely on your previous ego-oriented beliefs about abundance being a part of or not a part of your life. In an attitude of allowing, all resistance in the form of thoughts of negativity or doubt are replaced with simply knowing that you and your Source are one and the same. Picture the abundance you desire freely flowing directly to you. Refuse to do anything or have any thought that compromises your alignment with Source.

Step 4: Use your present moments to activate thoughts that are in harmony with the seven faces of intention [creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, abundance, and peaceful receptivity]. The key phrase here is present moments. Notice right now, in this moment, if you’re thinking that it’s hopeless at this stage of your life to change the thoughts that comprise your belief system. Do you defeat yourself with thoughts of having had such a long life practicing affirmations of scarcity and creating resistance to your success and abundance that you don’t have enough time left to counterbalance the thoughts that comprise your belief system?
Make the choice to let go of that lifetime of beliefs, and begin activating thoughts rights now that allow you to feel good. Say I want to feel good whenever anyone tries to convince you that your desires are futile. Say I want to feel good when you’re tempted to return to low energy thoughts of disharmony with intention. Eventually your present moments will activate thoughts that make you feel good, and this is an indicator that you’re reconnecting to intention. Wanting to feel good is synonymous with wanting to feel God. Remember, “God is good, and all that God created was good.”

Step 5: Initiate actions that support your feelings of abundance and success. Here, the key word is actions. I’ve been calling this acting as if or thinking from the end and acting that way. Put your body into a gear that pushes you toward abundance and feeling successful. Act on those passionate emotions as if the abundance and success you seek is already here. Speak to strangers with passion in your voice. Answer the telephone in an inspired way. Do a job interview from the place of confidence and joy. Read the books that mysteriously show up, and pay close attention to conversation that seem to indicate you’re being called to something new.

Step 6: Remember that your prosperity and success will benefit others, and that no one lacks abundance because you’ve opted for it. The supply is unlimited. The more you partake of the universal generosity, the more you’ll have to share with others. In writing this book, wonderful abundance has flowed into my life in many ways. But even more significantly, book editors and graphic designers, the truck drivers who deliver the book, the auto workers who build the trucks, the farmers who feed the auto workers, and bookstore clerks. all receive abundance because I’ve followed my bliss and have written this book.

Step 7: Monitor your emotions as a guidance system for your connection to the universal mind of intention. Strong emotions such as passion and bliss are indications that you’re connected to Spirit, or inspired, if you will. When you’re inspired, you activate dormant forces, and the abundance you seek in any form comes streaming into your life. When you’re experiencing low-energy emotions of rage, anger, hatred, anxiety, despair, and the like, that’s a clue that while your desires may be strong, they’re completely out of sync with the field of intention. Remind yourself in these moments that you want to feel good, and see if you can activate a thought that supports your feeling good.
Step 8: Become as generous to the world with your abundance as the field of intention is to you. Don’t stop the flow of abundant energy by hoarding or owning what you receive. Keep it moving. Use your prosperity in the service of others, and for causes greater than your ego. The more you practice detachment, the more you’ll stay in vibratory harmony with the all-giving Source of everything.

Step 9: Devote the necessary time to meditate on the Spirit within as the source of your success and abundance. There’s no substitute for the practice of meditation. This is particularly relevant with abundance. You must have an understanding that your consciousness of the presence is your supply. By repeating the sound that is in the name of God as a mantra, you’re using a technique for manifesting as ancient as recorded history. I am particularly drawn to the form of meditation called Japa. I know it works.

Step 10: Develop an attitude of gratitude for all that manifests into your life. Be thankful and filled with awe and appreciation, even if what you desire hasn’t arrived yet. Even the darkest days of your life are to be looked on with gratitude. Everything coming from Source is on purpose. Be thankful while empowering your reconnection to that form from which you and everything else originated.

As a conscious cocreator, first of all, you can choose to focus on manifesting a refined, evolved state of Being and a harmonious quality of life. Therefore, you should seek an abundance of love, joy, peace, creativity, good health, compatible satisfying relationships, etc. Seeking to incorporate the qualities, attributes and virtues of God Consciousness will assure success in creating all the material objects you require to live in comfort. You are learning to become one with the infinite flow of abundance, as you traverse the many levels and dimensions of Creation.”   From Dyer’s Book “Intention.”

The energy that creates worlds and universes is within you. It works through attraction and energy. Everything vibrates; everything has a vibratory frequency. As St. Paul said, “God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance.” Tune to God’s frequency, and you will know it beyond any and all doubt!  “Every thought vibrates, every thought radiates a signal, and every thought attracts a matching signal back. We call that process the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction says: That which is like unto itself is drawn. And so, you might see the powerful Law of Attraction as a sort of Universal Manager that sees to it that all thoughts that match one another line up.” ~ Esther & Jerry Hicks from Ask and It Is Given

From Byron Katie

We don’t know how to change; we don’t know how to forgive or how to be honest. We’re waiting for an example. You’re the one. You are your only hope, because we’re not changing until you do. Our job is to keep coming at you, as hard as we can, with everything that angers, upsets, or repulses you, until you understand. We love you that much, whether we’re aware of it or not. This whole world is about you.

Definition of Awakening by Deepak Chopra

Awakening from the point of view of the Indian wisdom tradition is the full realization of one’s true nature. This is a kind of waking up from the sleep of ignorance. Being fully conscious means there are no more dark or shadowed areas of the psyche that remain hidden from the light of the higher self.

Are We Afraid of Our Shadows?

I have been wondering  how awakening and reality can connect in a healthy way.   I hear from some people that they do not want to read the newspapers or listen to the happenings of the day.  They seem to feel that being in contact with the shadow side of life will contaminate their affirmative perspective of life.  Their focus appears to be on connecting with that which they consider to be higher realms of consciousness.  They want to live in the light, as many of us do, as well.   I guess they think that by associating with the reality of life with the corruption, war, poverty, racism,  deception, illness, sadness, powerlessless and all the rest of it, that their lights will be dimmed.   Perhaps they think that if they are busy awakening then……..everyone will be served…….eventually.

I am wondering if that thinking pattern is based in fear?  If God flows through everything, then why is part of everything excluded?  Why is the part that would realistically cause us to cry out in injustice not recognized?  Why would we want to hide from it?  Remember ‘The Secret’?  And The Law of Attraction?  What is it that draws people to focusing on creating what they want….like cars and houses?  Are we being deluded by creating at the level of the ego?

Because we all have inner work to do in varying degrees, isn’t that part which creates houses and cars (me stuff) more likely to be of ego vibration than Higher Self?   Asking the Divine Intelligence (or whatever you want to call it) to flow through us as we work to dissipate our emotional and mental blocks seems to me to be more effective than creating from our ego.   If I want peace in the world, my work is creating it in myself on all levels.  I can hold that thought for periods of time, but if I am embracing and clearing my shadows…..then my light shines more brightly in the world.  And the world reflects each and every light brightening.

So why is it that some people are not able to embrace the shadow of the world?  Is it because they don’t want to embrace their own shadow and do their work?  Is their fear of their own deep inner work projected onto their connection of being in the world?  Didn’t Jesus say something like  ‘be of the world not in it’?   To me, that seems to mean be in the place of observer and not to be attached to it.  Being close to the fire we can get burned but only if we are attached.  If we are attached we will feel it as though it was our own process.  That is scary to some people.  But if we are clearing our own blocks,  then we do not attach to the suffering.  We can be an observer and release the attachment energy into concrete action.  We see it as it is…..in its teaching role for all us to become more Love.

Mother Teresa saw God in all afflictions.  What if we can be in the world and turn the tables of the money-changers over as Jesus did?   What if we can be present and really hear the reality of life and not be overwhelmed?  What does that take?  Working our stuff which creates a higher vibration within ourselves so that we are not emotionally charged by our own past losses, deception, illnesses, poverty, injustices, etc.  Then our activist selves can work at our chosen level to facilitate change as we hold the vision of peace on earth, surrounding our world and everyone with healing luminescence.  Concrete activism can take place when we write our representatives about our visions, give money to assist those we need it, write articles, speak out, and volunteer to help where needed, and all the other beautiful things that people are doing right now.

Julian Assange modeled that work for us this week.  His website, Wikileaks, released pages of war notes.  They are not pretty.   But they are necessary for us to read to increase our awareness of what is going on around us and what we are choosing to support with our money.   (However, publishing names of individuals who could be hurt by disclosure is not appropriate, IMO).  We can be aware of and send light to all involved in this war in all levels of government and countries, send light to the soldiers on all sides who commit abuses in the name of ‘peace and freedom’, send messages to Congress and others (and we do not focus on the outcome of our messages…..but on the doing of the action itself).  We can experience outrage at the injustices and move into action.  We do not need to be afraid of being stuck or contaminated by the injustice or our anger.  It is a teaching just as incidents and relationships in our own lives are teaching us to heal out of fear and victimization into Love.

I imagine myself telling an Afghan woman who is struggling with fear for herself, her children, her family…….her dear life……..that I can’t hear because I am busy being awakened.  I will hold the light on for her, though.  I see her blank eyes stare at me.  My vibration expands if I see her in the present moment of her struggling, and I lend my heart and hand as I listen and really hear her pain ….without attachment……but deep compassion………to speak out for her, to seek accountability, to send money, to write……..as I feel her pain but not sink into it…….and to hold her trustingly in connection in my heart as I work.  Just as I hold in my heart with much light the soldier who after shooting and killing unarmed civilians…….as though it was a video game……. summarized the scene by saying one word…….”nice”.    Are we afraid of our own shadows?

A Prayer

Dear Divine Essence:

My desire, my priority is inner peace.  I want the experience of deep universal Love.  I don’t know what would bring that to me.  I leave the process of self-realization to your energetically transforming healing.   I trust in the process of life always deepening into Higher Consciousness.  I know that the qualities of my compassionate soul draw to me that which perfectly teaches me to love myself and all else in infinite expansion. I know that as my light shines more brilliantly…..so does the world.  The greed and corruption, lies and deception…..all forms of fear of surrendering to Love……..will gradually dissolve into the higher vibrations of compassion, cooperation and love as we each learn to walk our talk in healing our wounded hearts.   May grace surround us in our courageous transformations.

I continually beam my light to all the people and events of the world to join with their light as we realize who we truly are.  I am so very grateful that we are One in the core of our Being.

love,

Andrea

Who is Watching Whom?

“You look at this magnificent tree and you wonder who is watching whom and presently there is no watcher at all.  Everything is so intensely alive and there is only life, and the watcher is as dead as that leaf……Utterly still,…..listening without a moment of reaction, without recording, without experiencing, only seeing and listening….Really the outside is the inside and the inside is the outside, and it is difficult, almost impossible to separate them.”    Quote from Krishnamurti.

I live in the trees.   I have been watching them every day…..as they bend in the wind, how the sunlight filters through them, the shadows that are cast on each other and the land, the myriad of birds, squirrels, and raccoons who come to climb and jump and search for daily delights.

My perspective has been from my eyes to other.  And now I have opened to the other watching me as I go about my days and nights.  We share the awareness.  As I just sit in ‘it’……perception…….the concept of “I” and “other” melts away.  There is no me and there is no tree…..there is just the awareness that vibrates….first in form, now freely.  There is no inside……there is no outside.  It is as it is.  Words don’t help….they only lock it in and it can’t be limited.   It is a shift in energy that defies words.

And then I am back in my body but not in the same way.  Something has changed.

Spiritual Bypass

“One of the great dangers of transformational work is that the ego attempts to sidestep deep psychological work by leaping into the transcendent too soon. This is because the ego always fancies itself much more ‘advanced’ than it actually is.”

— Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson

I took a seminar on awakening not too long ago.  One concept that the leader shared was that it was not necessary to learn to love oneself before awakening. The definitions of the words ‘love oneself’ and ‘awakening’ are dependent upon each person’s perception.  Who knows exactly what that phrase means to someone else? However, this leader seemed to think that awakening was all that was needed.

I do know the intent of that thought runs counter to how I have been experiencing my lessons.  The more transformative work that I do with my inner process, the more clear I am about the love of who I truly am.  It just seems to me that removing the blockages produced by the ego’s energy of fear would lend itself to opening up the awakening process more clearly.

“We have no need to teach pure motives to the mind. All that is necessary to make the mind pure is to undo the negative conditioning to which it has been subjected; then we will be left with pure, unconditioned awareness.”

— Eknath Easwaran

It seems sometimes that there is a tendency to skip over psychological work in the search for a spiritual identity. This new identity, some with a different name change, is old cake with new frosting.  The same old beliefs about self, others, and the world are there chugging along.  But now the focus is on the new ‘spiritual’ self as the old self just bubbles along underneath.

If you have listened to one of these ‘teachers’ very carefully, at times you may hear the judgment and defensiveness creep into their voices when they are challenged.  Awakening by itself without the ‘soulwork’ of dealing with negative conditioning from our lives, seems to be a shaky house of cards.  It is tempting to believe that ignoring our stinky old baggage is as easy as a cat covering its poop in the box…but it just doesn’t seem to work that way.

Stinky is as stinky does.  We are all called to clear old conditioning that no longer serves us.  It means feeling the feelings, holding them in the compassionate light of the unconditional love that burns incessantly in our hearts…….that spark of the Divine that is always with us.  And some of us just don’t want to do the work.  We want to believe that we can leap-frog it over into the land of Enlightenment and forever wear the Buddha smile.  I just don’t buy it.

My experience shows me that my life is my path.  Everything I need to clear is within me.  I don’t need to go anywhere to find it.  No one else has the answer.  I am my path.  I just need to work it.  I am both the teacher and the student.
